The State has found high levels of lead in the soil of many homes near the Exide Technologies plant in Vernon. Adults and children living, working or going to school within 3 miles of the Exide plant are encouraged to get a free blood lead test. Lead poisoning can cause health problems. The only way to know if you have lead poisoning is with a blood lead test.
Community members who are interested in the free confidential blood lead screening, will need to fill out a lab form. Residents will be asked to provide the following information: home/work/school address, and telephone number. By calling 1-844-888-2290, the operator will mail out a lab form to the resident. The free blood lead screenings will be provided by appointment or walk-in at Quest Diagnostics Laboratory facilities. Residents will need to bring a completed lab form with them to their appointment.
The Department of Public Health will mail individual test results to residents as the results become available.
Residents with medical concerns are encouraged to contact their regular healthcare provider. For more information about Childhood Lead Poisoning, you may also call 1-800-LA-4-LEAD (1-800-524-5323) to speak directly to a Public Health expert.
